VHS to DVD question plz?

I have the DVD and VHS recorder but I have no idea on how to copy VHS to DVD and I have home vids that we want to record to DVD cuz everything is on DVD now it seems so plz tell me precisely how to copy VHS to DVD and what DVD r's are best for that.
