TiVo is just one option among many. If you have cable or satellite tv, most companies offer their own version, usually called a DVR or PVR. They usually cost a few bucks a month (5-10).

TiVo costs extra usually, b/c you must buy the unit and pay the monthly fee (13). There is a special deal right now though, where you can get the unit and monthly fee for a certain price a month(http://www.tivo.com/0.11.offer.drtv.asp?p=1695&WT.mc_id=25&WT.cg_s=25&requestid=13953673).

The biggest advantages to TiVo is that you can schedule recordings online. Let's say you take a weekend trip and forget to record something. You can then get online, log into your account and schedule something to record. With the newest models, you can also download to your laptop and burn to dvd.

Hope this helps!

We have Replay TV, which is something similar. You buy a box and pay a fee for the service. The DVR box will pretty much record similar to a vcr without the service. The service allows you to program to record shows by title, time slot etc. For instance if you like Law and Order -- you could set it up to record every time it comes on no matter what channel it is on. Or if you watch sitcoms on NBC every weekday at 8PM you could record those shows too. The service also gives you the searchable TV guide like digital cable.

My husband knows more about it, but we chose Replay over Tivo because we were able to network the boxes. We have 2 boxes, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. So we can record on our bedroom Replay box and watch it from our Living room box or vice versa.

Overall, I love it! I never miss a show I want to see anymore. Also, pausing live TV rocks. If you have to answer the phone, go get something from the kitchen, etc. you hit pause and you don't miss a thing! The instant replay feature is also pretty cool. Often I miss something that was said in a TV show. Now I can just hit rewind or instant replay and it replays it for me. Pretty cool!

My family has owned it for a while now (through DirecTV) and LOVE IT. It's very convienient, easy to use (my 3 year old can run it), and saved us lots of money by recording childrens programming versus buying DVD's.

TiVo is a 10 out of 10!
