anybody knows a free downloadable dvd software that can copy protected dvd's? or software that can convert dvd format .vob movies into any pc readable and compressed format, like .mp4, .mpeg, .avi, .mov, etc?

I just want to make a backup of my original dvd movies so I can use this if friends wants to borrow the movie and I don't have to give the original set. I don't want to see scratches and fingerprint marks on my discs. The least I can do is compress it on dvd or portable hdd so they can watch it on their pc's instead.

There is this great (in my opinion) little program that is free and works on most systems (multi-platform). Its called VLC. You can get it from the first source below, assuming you're a microsoft windows user.

I found a tutorial on youtube a while back where a guy puts together some pretty good presentations. It will walk you through your dilemma. I honestly don't remember about the copy protection though.

For conversion, there are a lot of converters that you can use. But you need some knowledge for video encoding and converting (like what format is better, the bitrate, and filesize etc..). You can use software like Virtual Dub, Easy-realmedia converter (convert to realmedia format) & many more.

For less hassle (and best to solve your problem -- copy "PROTECTED" dvds), you can use DVD SmartRipper, it can rip protected dvds, after ripping, what you need is just a Nero software and then burn it to a DVD-playable disc. ;)
