What is an External Tuner and do I need one to use my vcr/dvd combo to record broadcast television shows?

I bought a new Magnavox DVD/VCR with hdmi and digital audio coax and rca audio video ability. But It doesn't have a built in digital tuner. It is only good for recording or dubbing vcr tapes to dvd or dvd discs to vcr and plays through an HDMI cable to the Television set. I read somewhere in the owners manual that came with the unit that you have to connect it to an EXTERNAL TUNER. I never heard of this until now.

>What is an External Tuner

A box that selects a particular channel from an antenna or cable system and converts to to video and audio signals.

>do I need one to use my vcr/dvd combo to record broadcast television shows?

Yes. What kind of external tuner you need depends on where you get your TV signals.

Assuming you are:

-In the US

-Get your signals with a TV antenna

-Watch full power stations (not translators in remote areas)

The external tuner you need is called an "over the air converter box". You will probably have to buy this on ebay.com because the stores are sold out of the better models.

The government was giving out $40 off coupons for these that covered most of the cost, but that ended July 31, 2009.

If you have analog cable, you will need a old VCR or an external analog cable box or tuner. Many new DVD/VCR combos do not have a tuner. In other words you need something that can tune the cable channels and convert that to video/audio for your DVD/VCR.

Get a digital set top box to receive digital telly

connect the set top box the correct way

you could also be able to record

digital telly to VHS tape

via the HDMI 'input' sounds like, check first mm?

Ask a tech about it thet could either draw

you a picture of how to connect set top box, telly

and DVD / VCR.

Good Luck.

It is basically a box that tunes the TV source you receive and provides an analog A/V signal your recorder can use.

If you subscribe to a TV provider, they can provide you with a box that has A/V out. If you have antenna, you need a digital antenna converter box.
