TiVo is a video recorder that uses an intelligent tv program guide (that you pay a subscription for). You can tell it to record every episode in a series, or 'any movie with Julia Roberts' etc. It learns the programs you like from your selections and can automatically record recommendations for you, if you wish.

A DVR is a video recorder that simply records what you program it to record, using a digital medium like DVD or a hard drive.
