I have dish network now but will be switching to Directv when I move next month. Will I be able to watch the shows I have recorded to my external hard drive on the Directv receiver?
If not, will there be any way to watch them again or will they be gone forever?

No, that show can only be viewed when the external hard drive is connected to a Dish receiver with the same account number under which it was recorded.
Sorry, they are gone forever because if your account was closed you'll never get that account number back.

If you connect your external hard drive to your DirecTV receiver, it will reformat and you will lose all that you had recorded on it. The external hard drives on DISH can only be used on the same account and type of receiver, or they will have to reformat and you lose your recorded content.

Meddman, I wanted to let you know that you may able to get $10 off your monthly bill for 10 months (and so will I) if you use my account # (53107307) as a referral when you order your new DirecTV service. You can call 1-800-507-4045 and say that my acct # (53107307) with "Papp" as the last name referred you. Or use the link below to order online and plug my account number in that first screen. Seriously, it's a pretty great deal and worth the effort.
Acct # = 53107307; Last Name = Papp
