I dont believe you can. I have Direct TV and was thinking about getting cable and the cable company said I needed all new DVRs. Not sure where you live and how the prices compare but I understand that cable charges a Tivo fee for every Tivo in the house. Direct TV charges a lower monthly fee regardless of how many Tivos you have in the house. Both companies charge a receiver fee per receiver. To be honest, I am not sure why you cant use the same box. I dont remember either company explaining why. I hope this helps.

Tivo branded boxes work with either satellite or with ota and cable. I am not aware that any of them are interchangeable so if you have the ota and cable one . . .you will still need to get one that works with satellite. From what I read, Direct tv will still charge you $5 per month for the box even if you own it! Sucks!

The Direct TV DVR is pure garbage and they know it!!!!!!! I .battled with two of the R15 boxes for about 6 months. 5 boxes later I finally had enough and told them to take these turds out of my house. I've had Direct TV for about 10 years and with the TIVO service for about 4 when they talked me into trading them in for the DVR's. What a mistake!!!!!!!!!! They lock up and you have to keep resetting them then they finally give up completly. Also they are very user un friendly. the remote is near unusable. And if you pushed the wrong button you were in trouble because it will take you about 5 minutes to get back to where you were. That part is hard to explain, but it you own one of these you know what I'm talking about. Finally as I was ready to give up the retention department at Direct tv told me to try to find some old style TIVO units in the aftermarket because they can't provide them anymore. Pretty sad for them that that would be the solution!!! Buts thats what I did. Now I have my TIVO back and life is good again! But Direct TV did refund the $150 I paid for the used units. I just read that Direct has made a new deal with TIVO to continue servise till the year 2110. I think that tells the whole story. They have a problem! Another problem is that the Tech support people at Direct tv are programed to say they all have these r15 models and are very happy with them, and how they are far superior then the TIVO units. I do feel sorry for those poor people that have to deal with Irate past TIVO owners and the only thing there allowed to do is lie to us! My opinion is since TIVO has been having a hard time keeping it's head aflote financially Direct TV should be thinking of some kind of merger with them and scrap this DVR Idea!

I currently have Cable and I use my tivo box with it.. but we are thinking about getting Direct Tv and I still want to use my tivo box. I know Direct TV has its own box but I want to use the one that i already have.. Is it possible to install TIvo with Direct Tv or DO i need a get a new box from...

Okay it will depend on how new your Tivo box is? If it is a newer Tivo box that has dual tuner then you may be able to use it partially, remember that DirecTV only sends ALL of the channels in Digital signal, and cable channels (Even Digital cable channels) are NOT ALL digital. So Tivo upgraded theier newer models with dual tuners that can record 1 digital channel at a time, or 1 digital channel and 1 analog channel at the same time, or 2 analog channels at the same time. Now again with DirecTV you may be able to use 1 tuner only to capture the Digital signal.

If this does not sound great then there is another option. (DO NOT BUY A DIRECTV DVR, THEY ARE NOT TIVOS), you can find many DirecTV Tivo's on Ebay or garage sales or the like, just find one that is a Series 2 DirecTV Tivo and purchase it. It will work exactly as the Tivo brand except for networking and Tivo Desktop.

Now if you go this route then there is ways to upgrade the DirecTV Tivo's for networking, MultiRoom Viewing, Home Media Option, downloading the shows over you home network. Check out what I have written below and check out the sites. Hope this helps..

I have your answer.

First check out site #1 it has forums that explain how to hack your DirecTV Tivo and Tivo brand Tivo's so that you have Networking abilities on your D Tivo which allow MRV (multiroom Viewing if you have more than one D Tivo), HMO (Home media Option) which allows you to have a PC connected to your home network that can be used as a server for your MP3's and Pictures to be shown on your D Tivo. Once you hack the unit/s (HAS TO BE A SERIES 1 OR SERIES 2 DirecTV Tivo or Series 1 and Series 2 Tivo) you can apply some programs so that you can download the shows/movies from the decrypted programs stored on your D Tivo onto a PC for veiwing/Burning onto a DVD. If you have more questions I can give you alot more details if you email me. I have used these site below to aid me in Hacking 5 DirecTV Tivos (Qty2-SD-DVR40, HDVR2,Qty2- DSR704). I have HMO, MRV, can access over the internet with gotomydvr.com, can download shows/movies from all the units.

Site #2 is where you purchase the software necessary to upgrade the D Tivo, look for either their kits or if you want to upgrade yourself look at InstantCake 3.1 or 6.2, PTVnet, Slicer. (InstantCake is the operating system/ software displays you see on the screen, PTVnet is the software to boot the ISO disk you download onto your PC when you connect a NEW harddrive and it enables the USB ports and allows networking, The Slicer lets you get/receive upgrade from DirecTV without losing all your previous hacks upon software upgrades.)

#3 is a forum to get the other necessary software patches to allow you to decrypt the DirecTV signal before it is stored onto the D Tivos harddrive. And a patch to allow downloads of the shows/movies from the D Tivo. (Superpatch-67all-nutkase, and superpatch-62a, Tytool 10R4, and others)

#4 a forum on HOW TO and questions and answers

#5 a GREAT display of instruction with pics on how to remove the hard drive form the Tivo unit and install all the hacks)

#1 www.dvrplayground.com (Forum and instructions on how to hack units)

#2 www.dvrupgrade.com (site to purchase the DirecTV linux software to upgrade to a LARGE harddrive and enable the USB ports for networking)

#3 http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/

#4 www.tivocommunity.com

#5 http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os6hack.php (for Version 6.2)

#6 http://www.weethet.nl/english/tivo_dtv2_os4hackrid.php (for Software Version other than 6.2)

Hope this helps, and have fun. Any other questions feel free to email me.

Where do you people live? I live in California and have had my Tivo with Directv for 4 years. I get totally clear picture and sound. I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you have the IR remote leads for your Tivo box ,the ones I have seen have a single plug on one end with 2 leads from it with IR emitters on the end. These IR emitters are placed in front of a cable or satellite box and allow the Tivo to change channels as needed.I may be wrong about this however since I do not have a stand alone Tivo myself, but I seem to remember seeing this before. If I am not mistaken this should allow you to get 2 DirecTv standard receivers and have the Tivo control both of them. But if you really want a DirecTivo unit go to weaknees.com,they still sell the DirecTv Tivo units, regular,HD and hardware upgrades for older Tivo's if you have one and want to increase storage.Imagine replacing the single hard drive you have with a pair of 300 gig drives.

Yes, without a problem. You will not have dual tuning functionality if you own a DT, and you will not be able to watch one channel and record another with an older ST, but it works just fine. You will be able to use the TiVo remote to change channels provided you get the IR cables connected properly. TiVo has a lot of customers that use their standalone DVR's with DirecTV and Dish Network satellite receivers. There is no need to go out and get one of their crappy combo boxes. Check your stuff and see if you have the IR emitters (look kind of like headphones with a purple connection on one end... would have come in a bag labeled Cable Bag B when you got your TiVo) if you don't have them you can get them from TiVo's website. You'll have to repeat guided setup, but it's relatively painless. If you have problems just call TiVo support and ask for help.

I just want to clarify your question. Are you thinking of getting a standalone Tivo unit, or one of the Tivo based DirecTv units? -A stand alone Tivo unit used in addition to your current set up will cost you the normal Tivo subscription charge which I think is $15+ per month. (Note: you would STILL need your DirecTv DVR to receive the signal, so this makes it a complicated set up.) If you are thinking of getting one of the Tivo based units that DirecTV used to have, then 'no' you won't pay any extra. Just buy a Tivo based DirecTv unit, and switch them over. I would definitely go this route! I think you have the R15 DirecTv DVR. If so, that is DirecTv's first attempt at their own DVR. A major blunder in my opinion. Before that model they used TIVO based units that are SO MUCH BETTER! I was in the same boat. I returned to DIrecTv after a brief lapse and they gave me this R15 unit that came with a 2 year commitment. After using it a few weeks I got irritated with it and bought an R10 unit off of E bay for $90. The R10 is a Tivo based unit, and is MUCH better than the R15 unit.

Hi Nadyanne,

It really doesn't work well because you have to change the channels with the Direct TV box. If you forget you Tivo the wrong channel. You also can't watch one channel and TiVo another. It destroys the flexibility of TiVo.

You are going to have to use the piece of crap box from directv. I have it, and hate it. They used to use TiVo, then went to their own to make more money. It sucks. It is not as user friendly as TiVo at all. I have had it almost six months and still have difficulty navigating it. I was VERY disappointed with it.

Maybe now they have improved it somewhat. But I am pretty sure you are going to have to use theirs.

while reading a written publication, you're stimulating your brain. You improve your literacy and reading skills so you along the way, become more literate. Despite having today's modern technology, you should be able to read still.

While watching t.v. can be good fun, it is not doing anything to your brain.
