Most helpful answer will get 10 points.

What is the maximum length with low quality what is the length with highest quality?

Also I have DVD + RW discs and DVD - R discs. Is there a difference in the amount or quality of video I can have on each?

Could someone also tell me the best FREE DVD burning progam for .avi to DVD out there? It needs to be quite easy to use as I am a bit of an amateur when it comes to this!!

Oh and am I right in thinking that I HAVE to change .avi to another format before I can play it on most DVD players?

Cheers ;)

dvd+rw might not be as compatible with players as dvd-r. any newer one should play them though. the quality will be the same.

some dvd players will play avi files, some don't. it will state if it can or not in the owners manual.

Generally the maximum you can fit is around 2 hours of low/medium quality and 1 hour for high quality.

If this is a problem just use dual layer discs.

DVD-R are going to be the most compatible DVD's you could use, practically every DVD player can read DVD-R but not all (usually old) DVD players can read DVD+R and definitely not RW discs.

And yes you need to convert AVI to DVD for it to play.

most DVD recorders have 6 settings... the highest quality HQ will give you 1hr 2 mins on a 4.7gb dvd disc, then SP: 2hours, SP+ 2.5 hours,EP:3hours,LP:4hours, SLP: 6hrs 6 mins at Video quality, although without the lines and picture noise, so still better..

ALL dvd discs give you this exept the Dual Layer ones which almost double the times, as long as your Recorder is DL and there maybe compatability issues in other DVD players.

Generaly you can put 2 hours of video on a 4 gig disk but there is compression software out there that will allow you to shrink your video to nearly half of what you have. Or of course you could use double layer disks to fit 4 hours of video.
