Yesterday the power went out on my street for about three minutes. I was watching TV at the time. When it came back on, and rebooted, the message popped up "As issue has been detected that may affect your ability to record or pause Live TV."

It then says unplugging the box for one minute might fix it, but I've tried. I still cannot record, pause, rewind, or acess my recordings.

The error number it shows is 311, the reference number it shows is 0521

I have a Dish Network ViP612 DVR

hard drive is toast, do not plug the replacement into a power strip, a single outlet surge protector is fine but not necessary as long as your home is properly grounded and your dish installer grounded the dish properly. if you have the model 21 remote you can save ALL DVR timers, settings, locks etc into the smart remote. if you have the service plan ( rip off ) on your account you will not have to pay shipping. to save time with customer service tell them its completely dead and wont even power up, avoiding their attempt to trouble shoot it over the phone

You'll have to call Dish. Chances are, when the power went out, it fried the hard drive. If that's the case, they'll have to ship you a new DVR and you'll ship them the dead DVR back in the same box.

Unfortunately this means you've lost all recordings on the dead DVR. You'll also have to re-configure the new DVR from scratch - meaning you'll have to re-enter all your timers and everything.

They wanted me to pay for shipping, so I asked if they could at least enable the external USB port feature so I could use an external hard drive to expand my DVR's storage. It took out some of the sting of losing our recordings.

Also, ask about upgrading to the ViP712 DVR. It has more storage than the 612.

DO NOT UNPLUG or you will corrupt the hard drive and you might also have HDD bad sectors once it entered a strong voltage in your DVR.

if you upgraded the firmware just turn off the power surge and wait for a minute to reset the settings. if it did not reset call the customer support and ask them how to uninstall or revert back to the current firmware.

if you did not upgraded your firmware. you're HDD is already toasted, you need a tech dispatch for that.

Just plug it into the dish and give it a try.

Take out your smartcard and put it back in. That should reboot the system.
