I am trying to get my mother in-law a dvd recorder for christmas; however, she does not have a cable box or satellite box. She has cable but she only has basic cable hooked straight to the t.v. The dvd recorder says that a external tuner is needed or cable/satellite box. I am wondering what I need to get for her to have a dvd recorder? Can she hook her old vcr up to the t.v and the dvd recorder to the vcr?

So long as the VCR works, it can be a tuner for a DVD recorder. Or spend for a DVD recorder with a tuner, but that would be paying for a digital tuner that may not get used.

If you have analog cable, you will need a old VCR or an external analog cable box or tuner. Many new DVD/VCR combos do not have a tuner. In other words you need something that can tune the cable channels and convert that to video/audio for your DVD/VCR.
