Computer DVD burners now make both DVD-R and DVD+R’s. The DVD you buy to burn determines which you make. You will find the best luck of compatibility with DVD-R in living room DVD players.

The DVD+R’s can hold the most data and are generally used to back up information of a computer.

I've found +R's to be more compatible with read only DVD players as well. The important thing to keep in mind, is to always use the same type of media all the time.

I have found that +R's seem to be more capatable with standalone DVD players. dvdhelp.com has listings of which formats work on which dvd players
