Most laptops S-Video cable is ONLY for an OUTPUT signal so you can send video/pictures/Etc. to show on the TV. It is not an Incoming connection. The only possible way you can use a S-Video for input is if your laptop has a Capture Card in it.

If your Laptop has a Capture Card then you can use the software like Sonic to capture whatever signal form the DVR/ TV/VCR and capture and record it to your Laptops harddrive. If you not have a capture card then you can find them on Ebay for about $40 or so. Just search for a PCMCIA TV TUNER CAPTURE CARD. It will come with the card, the correct wiring (S-Video, RCA Audio and Video cable) so that you can see and hear what is incoming form the TV/DVR.

If this DVR is from DirecTV and is a DirecTV Tivo brand (NOT THE DIRECTV DVR) then I can show you how to modify the software so you can connect the DirecTV Tivo to your homes Internet connection so then you can transfer the shows/movies over your network to your laptop pretty easily..

If you have any more questions on this matter please feel free to send me an email and I can help you out further.

S-video cables only carry video so even if it was possible you wouldn't have any sound on your laptop. I understand what your trying to do but it's most likely impossible because your s-video on your laptop is an output meaning it will only take stuff from your computer to another source. And also when you plugged it up and nothing happened that was because your dvr is not setup to receive anything

besides the cable signal and then again the s-video port on your dvr may also be an output.

Are you using a Tivo? If not I can't help. This answer applies only to Tivo users.

TiVo has a program called TiVo To Go that is free. Download it to your PC. Connect your Tivo to your home network (you'll need a network adapter compatible with the Tivo unit) then transfer the program from your Tivo box to your PC using the free software. There is also a setting that allows you to convert the file during the transfer process for use with your iPod or other portable device.
